Álvaro Bautista

Álvaro Bautista has completed his first test onboard the Suzuki GSV-R by continuing to improve on his lap-times at a sunny Valencia today.

Bautista recorded a best time of 1’34.163 from his 41 laps during the final morning session of the three-day test, almost half-of-a-second quicker than he managed yesterday. He finished his first experience of riding a MotoGP bike on a very positive level and was extremely pleased with what he had accomplished during such a short spell on the machine. Bautista will now travel with Team Test-Rider Nobuatsu Aoki to Estoril in Portugal for a further three-day test next week.

Loris Capirossi (1’33.588, 43 laps) completed his test schedule at Valencia today by doing a final evaluation of some new aerodynamics and electronics systems as well as assessing some more Akrapovic exhaust systems. Capirossi will now have a complete break from riding the Rizla Suzuki GSV-R until February 2010 when MotoGP begins the test calendar for next year at Sepang in Malaysia.

The first race of the 2010 season will be under the floodlights at Losail in Qatar on Sunday 11th April, when Capirossi will make his 300th start at a Grand Prix event and Bautista will make his competitive debut on a MotoGP bike.

Loris Capirossi:

“We worked hard again today even though we didn’t have much time available this morning. The new stuff that has come to the test has been pretty interesting and the improvements to the engine are not too bad. The new cowling and pipes have both made some steps and overall we have improved by a few tenths on the lap-time. We really need to find about a second though and it makes me very upset that the rules have changed so much that we now can’t test until February. For me this does not help the championship because we need more tests to a make the bike more competitive. We will have a new bike in February and I hope it works well straight away because I know Suzuki is working really hard – I know that because they have come here with many things. The good thing is that I believe 100% in Suzuki and 100% in myself and my team, I will make sure my condition is good throughout the winter so I am ready for next year and I think that if we have a good bike we can be near the front.”

Paul Denning – Team Manager:

“These three days have been a good start towards the target of significantly improving Suzuki’s level in MotoGP in 2010. There haven’t been any fundamental changes to the bike here; those will come in February at Sepang, but the detailed work that Loris has completed, especially with the Akrapovic exhaust systems, new engine specifications and aerodynamics have made the bike easier and more consistent to ride. The lap-time isn’t spectacular, but it is a lot closer to the top group than it was during the race weekend so some progress has certainly been made.

“Álvaro’s transition to the four-stroke and to the team has been seamless; he looks very comfortable on the bike and appears to have ridden within his own abilities in this first test on the GSV-R. He has treated the three days not so much as a test, but as an extended track-day. He has certainly had some fun as well as beginning to understand the characteristics of the bike. Again today he didn’t run any of the updated parts, so to make consistent low 1’34s is a very positive start. He’s very focused and is an enthusiastic character to have in the pit and we are looking forward to having an enjoyable and hard-charging atmosphere with Loris and Álvaro for 2010.”

KAGAYAMA TO RACE BRITISH SUPERBIKES IN 2010

Suzuki GB and the Crescent British Superbike Team have today confirmed an agreement that will see Yukio Kagayama rejoin the team to race the 2010 British Superbike Championship and current Worx Suzuki rider Sylvain Guintoli move to the Alstare Suzuki World Superbike team.

Guintoli, who recently signed a contract to remain with the team, was offered the alternative to move to the World series after Suzuki factory bosses and the Alstare team witnessed his impressive migration to the Superbike class in the UK during the 2009 season.

Said Suzuki GB Managing Director, Yasuharu Osawa: "Sylvain has proven to be an incredible asset for Suzuki this year, despite his unfortunate injury early on. We want to support Sylvain's career while also doing what is best for the Suzuki family, so following Alstare's request, we have unanimously agreed for him to move to World Superbikes for the 2010 season. We would like to thank the BSB team sponsors, especially Worx, for their complete support in this decision."

Worx Crescent Suzuki team manager, Jack Valentine added: "To have Yukio back in the UK is great news. He is still a class act and was incredibly popular with UK fans during his two-year stint in the series last time. He is as determined as ever and will be back here with one goal in mind - to challenge for the title. Our decision to run two riders in 2010 is also good news for the BSB Championship, for Suzuki and for all of our partners."

While the Worx Crescent Suzuki team have confirmed their two rider 2010 championship assault, confirmation of the full rider line-up will be confirmed at a later date.

Frustrating qualifying leaves Rizla Suzuki with a lot to do

Rizla Suzuki racers Loris Capirossi and Chris Vermeulen have a big mountain to climb during tomorrow's Australian Grand Prix after the pair qualified on the fifth row of the grid today.

Capirossi (P13, 1'31.873, 30 laps) did make steps forward with his bike in the early part of the morning practice session, before heavy rained intervened, and was consistently posting times within the top-10. He continued with the programme for getting the best set-up during the qualifying session and although his times were comparable with the other riders on the harder compound of tyre, Capirossi was unable to make a big enough jump with the softer compound to propel himself up the grid.

Vermeulen (P15, 1'32.338, 29 laps) was left bitterly disappointed after his qualifying session this afternoon. He improved dramatically on his times from yesterday, but couldn't find enough to get in a challenging grid position for tomorrow's race. One positive note for Vermeulen was that when the heavy rain fell in the morning practice he was one of the fastest and most consistent riders in the wet and will almost certainly be in contention during tomorrow's race if conditions like those of this morning repeat themselves.

Today's qualifying was held in very overcast conditions with a threat of rain always in the air, a strong breeze blowing off the Pacific made conditions feel considerably cooler than they were and gave the venue a feel more like ‘Phillip Iceland' than Phillip Island. Local hero Casey Stoner on his factory Ducati took pole position as he goes in search of his third successive home GP victory.

Tomorrow's 27-lap race will get underway at 16.00hrs local time (05.00hrs GMT) with both Rizla Suzuki riders looking to make a good start to give them a fighting chance of a competitive race and higher places than their grid positions.

Loris Capirossi:

"It was another tough day for us today, even though we did make another step with the overall setting of the bike. During the morning session we were making some good progress, but after 30 minutes it started to rain and ruined what we were doing. In the qualifying the conditions were better and we made some good runs with the harder compound tyre and it wasn't too bad for us, but when we tried to go quicker with the softer one we just couldn't make a big difference. We struggled on the left corners because we were spinning a lot and we need to find a good solution to give us better traction. We have improved the feeling from the front compared to yesterday, but it is not enough because we need better traction to go faster. It is bad to be starting so far back, but for sure in tomorrow's race I won't finish in the same place in the race as I did in the qualifying!"

Chris Vermeulen:

"We had difficult weather this afternoon; the rain could have come at any moment just like it did this morning. We did a few laps in the wet this morning - in fact I think I was the first one out - and the bike felt pretty good and I managed to get lots of information if it's wet tomorrow. In the dry it was tough in qualifying and we're really struggling with rear grip on the left-hand-side and the performance of the tyre seems to drop off after only a few laps, so we need to try and improve on that. We tried some things today that helped a bit and we went over a second quicker than we did yesterday, but it's still not where we need to be. We need to find some positives from today and go and give it 100% tomorrow."

Paul Denning - Team Manager:

"Phillip Island has been our nemesis over the last few years and I am now starting to dislike the place as much as our bike obviously does! There is no hiding the fact that the qualifying result is a disaster, but it's also true that we have taken a decent step compared to 2008 and the difference in our lap-time to pole position and the second row shows that. Unfortunately lap-times count for nothing and the positions are not where they should be. The only silver lining is that if it's dry we have a similar pace to a lot of the field on the harder tyre and everyone else seemed to find a big step on the softer compound to give them better grid positions, so fingers crossed we'll be able to keep reasonable consistency in the race and try to aim at least for the top-10."

Home-race action awaits Vermeulen in Australia

Home-race action awaits Vermeulen in Australia

Rizla Suzuki MotoGP is on its way over the equator for the only Grand Prix on the calendar held in the southern hemisphere, as the team embarks on its trip ‘down under' to Phillip Island for the Australian Grand Prix.

Chris Vermeulen is eager to get to his home circuit and perform in front of his countrymen at the 4,448m Australian circuit. The 27-year-old will be hoping for better luck than he had at last year's corresponding event, when a first lap collision pushed him off the track and ruined any chances of a good result. Vermeulen has happy memories of Phillip Island, as it was the scene of his first MotoGP podium for Suzuki in 2006, a feat that he would certainly like to repeat this time around.

Loris Capirossi has an enviable record at Phillip Island, having competed at the antipodean circuit 11 times and recording six podium finishes and five front row starts, including victory there in his first Grand Prix season in 1990 riding a 125cc on his way to the World Championship title. Capirossi will be looking to repeat that sort of form as he heads to Australia following some promising developments onboard the Suzuki GSV-R at recent events.

Philip Island is the fastest circuit of the season and possibly the finest race-track in the world. Its amazing position overlooking the Pacific Ocean is simply breathtaking, added to the awe-inspiring series of turns that the track has to offer and the ultra-fast straight, this is one of the must-see events on the racing calendar. It is a real examination of both man and machine and an ultimate test on tyres due to the long corners that are taken at high speeds and powered around.

The antepenultimate round on this year's schedule will be the first of a Pacific Rim double-header with the race at Sepang to follow just a week later. The action gets underway on Friday 16th October with the first of two free practice sessions - the second the following morning - with an hour of qualifying scheduled for Saturday afternoon. Sunday's 27 lap race will start at 16.00hrs local time (05.00GMT).

Chris Vermeulen:

"A home GP is always very exciting because all my friends and family will be there and it's always good to race in front of your countrymen. The last time out at Estoril we made improvements in the longer corners with the GSV-R, so hopefully that will help us at Phillip Island. That long straight is going to be hard work, but we'll certainly be trying as hard as we can to keep in the slipstream. I really love racing at Phillip Island and hopefully we'll have a good time there!"

Loris Capirossi:

"I am still disappointed by what happened in the race at Estoril, but I am confident of doing much better at Phillip Island than we have in the past on the GSV-R because of the developments we made in Portugal. I had a tough race in Australia last year, but we did improve on lap-times and with the new bike I think we should be aiming for an even better result this year. We have struggled at Phillip Island in the past, but we are certainly going there in a much better state of mind than we have done for previous visits."

Suzuki camp react to difficult weekend

Australian rider Chris Vermeulen was unable to extend his strong Laguna Seca record on Sunday at the Red Bull U.S. Grand Prix having suffered a heavy crash on Saturday and experienced difficulties with the set-up of his Suzuki GSV-R machine throughout the weekend.

Vermeulen came home in eighth place, from ninth on the grid, before telling motogp.com, “It was a little bit difficult, because I was sore from the crash I had on Saturday and that didn’t help things. To be honest we really struggled with the bike set-up to improve on what we had last year, even though our race time was quicker than last year, because everyone else has taken a bigger step forward. So it was tough for us.”

He continued, “I really struggled with the front tyre that Bridgestone had here, it was very different to last year. But that’s the single tyre supplier rule, it is the same for everyone and you’ve got to make your bike work around it. Anyway I got a pretty bad start, pretty bad couple of laps in which I got tangled up with (Colin) Edwards and (Loris) Capirossi and eventually came through for eighth. I felt our pace was probably good enough for sixth or seventh but it wasn’t as good as we needed to be at the front.”

After crashing out early in the race Loris Capirossi, meanwhile, was understandably disappointed with his second DNF of the year. The Italian commented, “I am really upset about this because we have worked so hard over weekend to find the best solution and we thought we would be ok with the setting. I started quite well and was really aggressive in the first couple of laps, but on turn six I lost the front on the second lap and then on the next lap I did the same in the same place, but that time I crashed.”

“The truth is this has been a terrible weekend for me as we never really found a good solution. Fortunately we have another nine races in front of us and we will keep working really hard to get some good results.”
